Norwalk Reflector, Ohio — Norwalk Reflector, Ohio

May 16--NORWALK -- Racers will be competing on new concrete at the 12th annual Cavalcade of Stars this weekend at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk.

The event is one of 44 scheduled across the country where drivers in the NHRA Lucas Oil drag racing Series earn points leading to divisional, regional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000.

Among the categories of the event are Top Alcohol dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Competition Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Pro Stock snowmobile.

While the payout is already plentiful in the event's quickest and fastest categories, Top Alcohol dragster, which sees 285-plus mph vehicles, and Top Alcohol Funny Car, which sees 270-plus mph vehicles, Summit Motorsports Park has put up $11,600 for drivers qualifying. That pushes the total purse to close to $30,000.

Added adrenaline will come from the R&R Auto Body and DeCerbo Construction Rumble Wars Extreme 8, a five-race Pro Mod series which debuts at this event, and will also be contested at four other upcoming events at Summit Motorsports Park, including the famous Night Under Fire on Aug. 11.

Flames will fly with Scotty "Heat" Holdridge and his jet engine-powered dragster, Sarah Edwards and her Queen of Diamonds II jet engine-powered dragster -- and Rich Hanna and Ken Hall and their jet engine-powered Funny Cars. Ten ScottRod's AA/Gassers will gallop down track and fireworks will fill the sky beginning at 9:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Gates open at 7 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials start at 9 a.m. Friday and continue at 9 a.m. Saturday. Top dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top sportsman qualifying is at 3 p.m. Friday and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualify at 5 p.m. Friday and at 4 and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Eliminations will begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday with Top Alcohol dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car running eliminations at 12 p.m.

Special exhibition shows are scheduled at 5 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, including Pro Stock snowmobiles and the jet cars.

Tickets for the event are $15 for Friday, $20 for Saturday and $15 for Sunday. Children 12 and under are free. For more information call the track at 419-668-5555 or visit summitmotorsportspark.com/com.

"There are so many things about this event that make it the experience that it is," said Bill Bader Jr., Summit Motorsports Park president. "It has really grown, and people have really put it on their radars. It's now a must-attend event, and I, for one, am very anxious to see all of the cars go down the new track surface. It's going to be pretty special."

The $1.6-million track reconstruction includes new asphalt in the staging lanes. The head of the staging lanes through 100 feet past the finish line will be concrete from barrier wall-to-barrier wall, with new asphalt from that point through part of the sandtrap at the the end of the track.
