Faced with years of soaring overdoses, Orange County leaders are directing more money to drug treatment centers - but a new law is emptying the very beds the county hopes to fill, and experts fear an increase in deaths. The Board of Supervisors recently approved spending $1.7 million for the next two years to rent more beds at detoxification and rehab centers, on top of the $9.4 million earmarked in May. But after November's voter-approved proposition that classifies drug-related and other nonviolent crimes as misdemeanors rather than felonies, officials report dramatic drops in the number of people seeking government-funded treatment.

LA PALMA - Authorities said a 2-year-old girl drowned Friday in a backyard pool in La Palma. It was the second drowning in Orange County this year, raising concerns of a second straight year of increasing drowning and near-drownings, an Orange County Fire Authority captain said.

Morning commutes may be unpleasant as traffic flowing south from Orange County toward San Diego will almost certainly be stacked up much of the next three weeks. Two of the five southbound lanes are to be barricaded off from 5 a.m. through 1 p.m. on Monday, a pattern that is to continue weekdays for the next three weeks, Caltrans officials said.
